Sports Therapists use a variety of treatment techniques. These are applied to joints/soft tissue with the aim of reducing pain, minimising inflammation, optimising healing, and restoring mobility/function in acute and chronic injuries/conditions. Evidence-informed and appropriate use of Sports Therapy treatment must be underpinned by contemporary understanding of their effects and consideration of any biological, psychological, and sociological factors which are important when managing pain, dysfunction, and tissue healing.
The aim of this module is:
- To equip you with the theoretical and practical knowledge that you will require to select and administer Sports Therapy treatments in a variety of contexts, with the aim of returning individuals to their full functional fitness in the shortest, safest possible time.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Select, demonstrate, and justify the safe application of massage and electrotherapy treatment modalities for a given patient presentation with awareness of precautions and contraindications.
- Select, demonstrate, and justify the safe application of manual therapy treatments for a given patient presentation with awareness of precautions and contraindications.
- Demonstrate an evidence-based approach to selection of treatment modalities, and the ability to critically evaluate their use and effectiveness in different contexts.
Students will learn the theoretical underpinning and practical application of a variety of sports therapy treatment techniques. These will include:
- Massage
- Thermotherapy
- Taping
- Peripheral mobilisation
- Spinal mobilisation
- Electrotherapy
- Weekly lectures and accompanying slides (total time 2h). Students are able to access these materials anytime via Listen Again if they are not able to attend.
- Weekly self-directed learning activities (e.g., articles, videos, blogs). Include a variety of activities that include different medium of instruction (e.g., audio, video) to suit different learning styles.
- Weekly practical classes (2h). These classes will take place on campus only, and attendance will be monitored. Students will be supported and encouraged to attend. It is a PSRB requirement to attend a minimum of 80% of all practical sessions in order to be eligible to sit the practical exam.
- Weekly self-directed practice (recommended time 2-3h). Sports Therapy labs will be made available outside of teaching for students to practice their practical techniques.

- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
