MSC B16024 Physiotherapy (Pre-Registration)
This module considers the development of students as future leaders, recognising the evolving contexts in which they will practice. Students learn about the concept of leadership and begin to develop skills to enable them to lead their own develop and that of others.
The aims of this module are:
- To allow students to develop as future leaders, recognising the evolving contexts in which they will practice.
- To develop skills to enable students to lead their own development.
- To develop skills that enable students to facilitate the development of others through an enhanced understanding about the concept of leadership.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Critically evaluate and synthesise the role of physiotherapists as leaders within health and social care.
- Identify opportunities to promote physiotherapy leadership in complex and unpredictable situations and propose appropriate solutions.
- Construct and present systematic and robust arguments around topics influencing healthcare practice, drawing from a range of sources.
Indicative Content
- Identifying ongoing CPD and the benefits to individual and service development.
- Context of practice and evolving health care systems e.g. FCP, modern matron, etc.
- Critically exploring and evaluating common policies and practices - proactive vs reactive.
- Models of leadership.
- Leadership skills (eg. communication, emotional intelligence, change management, being aware of own beliefs and the potential influence on others).
- Service Improvement.
- NHS Leadership strategy.
- Challenging common misconceptions around health and risk averse populations.
This module involves a significant amount of independent learning, accompanied by supplementary lecture and tutorial content.
