This module will explore key topics for practising sport and exercise psychologists, and develop skills to undertake consultancy with different client groups. The module will provide you with an understanding of the importance of maintaining ethical standards, along with important insight into the different frameworks adopted in applied work. You will develop your ability to design, implement, and evaluate interventions, and to apply reflective practice as part of your ongoing development.
The aim of this module is:
- To develop knowledge of key topics and frameworks in sport and exercise psychology practice along with the fundamental skills required to forge a successful career working with different client groups.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate a systematic understanding of issues within professional practice in sport and exercise psychology.
- Identify ethical issues in applied sport and exercise psychology.
- Critically discuss different philosophies and approaches to professional practice.
- Develop skills to work effectively with different clients and populations in sport and exercise psychology.
- Apply psychological needs assessment techniques.
- Critically reflect upon their own professional skills to benefit future learning and practice.

This module will be delivered via:
- Ten 3-hour seminars.
- Voluntary support classes.
- Reading and discussion tasks, questions and online resources.
Seminars:
Seminars will be used to introduce and discuss key topics for practising sport and exercise psychologists, and to develop skills to undertake consultancy with different client groups. Seminar activities will involve discussions of readings, case-studies and other materials, and role playing scenarios based on potential situations sport and exercise psychologists may encounter in their profession. These activities will provide important formative feedback in preparation for the module assessments.
Independent:
Students are expected to undertake directed and independent reading of key textbooks, journal articles, and other materials to support their learning and help prepare assignments. Case studies and associated problem-based learning activities will also be provided on the virtual learning environment to facilitate discussions of scenarios encountered by practising sport and exercise psychologists. Psychologist-client role-play scenarios and related activities should also be undertaken amongst the cohort outside of contact hours to develop the students' ability to conduct a needs assessment and interpret data.
