Module description

Further Research Methods in Sport, and Exercise and Health examines both the philosophical fundamental assumptions underlying quantitative and qualitative research, and methods aspects such as study design, sampling and data collection, and the validity and reliability of measurements.


Students will learn about data analysis methods so to be able to select appropriate analysis techniques, and both interpret and report the findings that these produce.


Additionally emanating from these topics, discussions throughout lecture, seminar and lab sessions seek to deepen understanding of some of the often-overlooked issues within scientific research literature. Through these discussions and dedicated sessions, students will learn to critically appraise published research using one or more recognised frameworks.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To equip students with skills, methodological knowledge, insight and critical thinking skills required to engage with existing research literature at an advanced level. Through these same means, it also aims to equip students to design and implement good quality research in an ethical manner.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate critical understanding of how to conduct qualitative and quantitative research, including aspects of ethics, philosophy, design, data collection, and measurement.

  2. Demonstrate comprehensive understanding relating to selection of appropriate data analysis techniques.

  3. Demonstrate ability to critically analyse, interpret and report qualitative and quantitative data related to sport, exercise and health.

  4. Demonstrate ability to retrieve and critically appraise published articles related to sports and exercise sciences.
