Module description

This module discusses the developmental processes and issues across the lifespan, considering theories and research findings, guidelines, and current practice. It also explores how determinants of participation vary across the lifecourse, and deep-dives into school-based inteventions.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To equip students with critical understanding of, and thereby enhanced ability to address through scholarly activity and real-world practice, developmental processes and issues in sport, exercise and physical activity.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate critical understanding of aspects of psychological development via sport, exercise and physical activity.

  2. Demonstrate critical understanding of the role of schools and school interventions for physical activity.

  3. Demonstrate critical understanding of determinants of sport/exercise/physical activity across the lifespan.

  4. Demonstrate critical understanding of physical activity in older adults from a psychological perspective.

  5. Demonstrate critical understanding of sporting career transitions/termination from a psychological perspective.
