This module explores assessment methods utilised in the musculoskeletal field. It explores the role of assessment and the relative contribution of our assessment tools. The evidence base supporting and directing the application of physical examination methods, subjective assessment components, imaging techniques and laboratory investigations will be considered. Students will be able to direct their learning to tools appropriate for their area of specialisation, e.g. hand therapy, lower limb specialist etc.
The aims of this module is:
- To expand their knowledge and skills in order to manage patients with a range of musculoskeletal conditions beyond their current scope of practice.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate a skilled examination of the musculoskeletal system.
- Critically evaluate the use of additional diagnostic tools within the assessment of patients with musculoskeletal pathologies.
- Critically evaluate and use the available evidence base in relation to decision making within musculoskeletal assessment.
Minimum enrolment:
Please note that if insufficient numbers of students (i.e. <10) opt to take this module we may have to cancel it at short notice. If this is the case we will of course notify anyone who has applied to take this course in a particular term as soon as possible and offer an opportunity to discuss alternative options.
This module will be delivered via:
- Three days of 'face to face' teaching (typically via a digital platform) will include lectures and task driven seminars.
The module teaching material will be available to all registered students via the university's intranet learning platform, Moodle.
There are no timetabled tutorials, students are encouraged to e-mail the module leader for learning support if required.

- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.

- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
