Module description

This module offers in-depth insights into different sport coaching contexts (e.g., community sport coaching, disability and para-sport). The module explores the characteristics that define various coaching contexts, including key organisational differences (e.g., goals, objectives) and nuanced coaching approaches. Through engaging with social, psychological and cultural perspectives, as well as accounts from coaches and athletes, students will examine the underpinning complexity and working conditions of different coaching contexts, and the myriads of task demands placed on practitioners. Over the course of the module, students will develop a critical attitude towards considering ideas of social relationships and effective coaching practice in respective contexts, as well as the intersecting pressures, challenges, expectations, dilemmas and opportunities that feature in each. Students will become more robust and conscious coaching practitioners through the application and critical discussion of adaptive and appropriate context-specific coaching practice(s).

Module aims

The aims of this module are:

  • To develop students’ understandings of the characteristics, conditions and realities of different sport coaching contexts.

  • To critically consider contextually appropriate coaching practice(s).

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of specific issues, problems and considerations relating to specific contexts.
