Module description

This is a work-based module for students on 4-year sports therapy and sports and exercises sciences courses.

In year 3 students undertake a year-long placement in a sport and or exercise related environment.

Students have the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and professional behaviours relevant to their academic discipline and career aspirations through first-hand experience of the workplace.

Module aims

1. To provide the student opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and skills in a practical context.
2. To provide the student opportunity to develop professional workplace skills and behaviours.
3. To provide the student opportunity to analyse their own, and receive feedback about, their developing knowledge, skills and behaviours within a working context. (NB for sports therapists this must be from a qualified sports therapist or Physiotherapist.)
4. To enable students to broaden their appreciation of their potential career paths.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate awareness of and compliance with policy, procedure and codes of practice/conduct relevant to the professional and working context.

2. Critically discuss the practice opportunities (potential or realised) for a sports therapist/sports and exercise scientist within the placement context.

3. Demonstrate and critically reflect upon achievement of their individual learning agreement.

4. Identify, understand and critically reflect upon the importance of workplace skills e.g. inter- personal working relationships, leadership and communication within the context of the placement experience.

5. Identify potential personal career paths.

Other information

For sports and exercise science students a placement year provides: opportunity to identify and develop their transferable work place skills; enhance their understanding of how academic knowledge can be utilised in the work place; and opportunity to explore a potential career paths.

For sports therapy students a placement year provides opportunity to consolidate and develop their sports therapy practice and explore the evidence base underpinning their future profession.

Students work alongside the University placement team to identify, apply for and secure a placement year opportunity.

Prior to commencing the placement (normally in September/October) the University placement team liaise with the placement provider to negotiate and sign a tri-partied agreement.

Prior to the placement students will complete a personal learning contract which they should negotiated and agree with their academic supervisor (pre-placement) and their placement provider (during their indication period).

Throughout the placement the student will work under a named supervisor (or onsite supervisor) to gain practical, hands on experience of the workplace.

Throughout the placement the student and onsite supervisory will be in communication with the relevant academic supervisor and placement administrator as agreed in the tri-partied agreement.

Learning and teaching methods

Overview: Students will liaise with their academic and onsite supervisor on a regular basis throughout the placement, and as necessary after the placement to facilitate completion of the module assessment. An academic supervisor will be appointed prior to the student commencing placement. The academic supervisor will be available via email and phone during placement. Placement: Students will spend a placement year (minimum 30 weeks) in a workplace relevant to their academic studies. Online: Moodle will be used to support the delivery of the module Students may take part in skype calls with their academic supervisor Tutorials: Students will be visited or contacted on placement by their academic supervisor. A summary of each visit will be recorded on the 'LEAP' system. The onsite supervisor/organisation will be supported by the placement team. Skills: During placement students will develop communication, leadership and self-awareness skills associated with graduate work as well as profession specific skills consistent with the working context.

Additional coursework information

Exact placement experience (roles, responsibilities and tasks etc.) will be determined by individual learning agreements and the tri-partite agreement. Tutorial support from academic supervisor during placement, to support development of reflective thinking, profession specific & workplace skills/behaviours, and the assignment task. Summaries of support tutorials to be recorded on ‘LEAP’ by the academic supervisor.
