Module description

Students will continue to progress their generic and physiotherapy-specific skills, building on their practical experiences at earlier levels of study. This module is designed to enable students to further expand their ability to practice effectively and independently within the practice-based setting and to consolidate their learning by experiencing more complex patient problems. The module therefore prepares students to take up the role of independent and autonomous practitioners.


This module aligns to the clinical, research, education, and leadership pillars of practice (CSP 2020).

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To manage increasingly larger caseloads and more complex patient problems with minimal supervision.

  • To justify clinical reasoning and associated decision-making, using reflection and relevant evidence.

  • To focus on autonomy in practice and demonstration of ability and willingness to continue professional development after qualification.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate the ability to integrate health and safety legislation into practice and fulfil all responsibilities related to legal, ethical and local considerations of professional practice, including non- discriminatory practice.

  2. Demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes of the level 5 Physiotherapy Placement (CPAF) assessment form.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • A minimum of 35 hours of placement activity per week. Each placement is six weeks in length.

During practice-based learning activity students are expected to undertake practical application of theoretical skills learned within the University setting, as appropriate to the environment (which may be clinical, research or leadership based).  

Including:

  • Direct practical involvement in the management of a diverse range of patient pathologies and problems.
  • Having direct involvement with patients with a variety of needs, cultures and beliefs.
  • Being immersed in the physiotherapy and wider health care provision environments and participate in opportunities for multidisciplinary and collaborative working.
