Module description

This module introduces students to the principles of strength and conditioning with a focus on the practical application of sports science to athlete preparation. Key areas include planning and executing training plans, enhancing athletic performance through exercises targeting strength, speed, and power, and monitoring athletes' condition over time. Lectures cover topics from warm-up design to training load management, while practical sessions involve exercises like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses, as well as assessments to solidify learning.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To provide students with a foundational understanding of the principals of strength and conditioning and the application of science for athlete preparation, programming and monitoring.

  • For students to gain practical experience in the assessment and monitoring of athletes.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Identify and apply methods to adjust training volume and intensity.

  2. Evaluate and address challenges in preparing, monitoring, and facilitating recovery for athletes.

  3. Articulate the scientific foundations of strength and conditioning training.

  4. Implement and oversee exercise regimens, manage training sessions and conduct warm-ups.

  5. Recognise and understand the implications of overtraining on athletes.

  6. Execute with proficiency, key exercises that can be prescribed to enhance athlete performance.

The module also enhances key skills such as:



  • Effective communication.

  • Problem-solving, particularly in training programme design and execution.

  • Creative and innovative thinking in training approaches.

  • Organisational abilities for planning and monitoring training schedules.
