Module description

The module aims to assist students in developing theoretically informed understandings of sports coaching pedagogy. It will draw on theory from pedagogy, psychology and educational studies. Students will learn about topics including behaviour change, motivation, and the interface between curriculum and pedagogy. Particular emphasis will be placed on how coaches often learn through athletic experience. Students will explore how theory and coach education research can be used to disrupt and augment coaching to improve performance and participation outcomes.

The overall aim of this module is to provide a conceptual understanding of sports pedagogy.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
1. Describe contemporary themes and activities within sport pedagogy research
2. Discuss the importance of understanding how coach behaviour influences participant experiences and other outcomes.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with embedding and applying sport pedagogy theories in sports coaching
4. Describe the ways in which the coach can support athletic and personal development of participants

Learning and teaching methods

This module is delivered by a mixture of blended teaching methods including online and face to face lecture (10 hrs; 5 x 2hrs) and Independent reflective self-study (20 hrs).
