Module description

The module will provide a sound knowledge of the mechanisms associated with the control and regulation of the major systems of the body. The material covered, in lectures and practical classes will provide a foundation for more advanced study of Exercise Physiology or applied biomedicine. This module will also develop independent study skills and the ability to obtain and assess scientific information.

Module aims

The aim of this module is to provide knowledge on the fundamental concepts of human anatomy and physiology which underpin the biological sciences.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

* Describe the structure, function and control of the major organ systems of the body.
* Understand and appreciate the variety of cell types involved in the formation of tissues and organs and the principle concepts of human functioning
* Demonstrate basic anatomical knowledge of the human being with particular detail in the musculoskeletal, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems
* Demonstrate understanding of systems physiology with particular detail in muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems
* Develop key skills related to ICT, numeracy, problem solving, working with others and self-directed learning.

Learning and teaching methods

The module will combine a number of different teaching approaches. Students will be supported in their learning, to achieve the above outcomes, in the following ways: Lectures and workshops: You will be taught through a mixture of interactive lectures and workshops, online virtual learning and self-directed study. Lectures and workshops will introduce core material, whilst self-directed study will reinforce this information. You will be encouraged to consolidate and extend lecture material from recommended textbooks. Moodle will be used for: * As repository of module information * To provide links to internal and external learning resources * To facilitate assessment and learning activities * To encourage learner autonomy * To facilitate feedback information on assessment for learning and other activities Tutor-directed learning will include developing and further study of topics introduced in lectures plus the research of a selected workshop topics, and the creation of comprehensive revision notes. Feedback will be given on each topic, plus students will be able to self-assess their work from module answers placed on the Moodle site. This will allow students to close the gap between current and desired performance. Independent study will include progressive MCQ tests delivered via Moodle. The instant feedback provided will allow students to identify and address strengths and weakness in your knowledge and prepare for the final exam.
