This module aims to provide and enhance a variety of skills and techniques that allow first year undergraduate Psychology students to get the most from their degree.
After taking part in this module, students should be able to:
Understand the main differences between school/college and University education and appreciate both the opportunities and responsibilities of University education
Understand the difference between academic writing and informal writing
Critique written work in terms of its meaning, writing style and structure
Appreciate the role of good structure in well written essays and lab reports
Use lectures, handouts and other modalities effectively to guide and support their learning.
Access online resources to aid learning
Work in groups during the module, but also afterwards to aid study, coursework and revision
Talk competently in front of fellow students and listen appropriately to them, both during talks and as part of a discussion group
Allocate time appropriately across the variety of tasks that University comprises
Understand plagiarism and cite/reference others' work appropriately
Plan revision and use a variety of methods to optimise exam results
We have identified key areas that many students find challenging, but that are a central part of successful students' approach. The module will introduce these skills in the first two teaching weeks of the Degree Course, with an extra Revision session timetabled towards the end of the Spring term.
The module employs a variety of teaching modes (Lectures, labs, small group tasks).
