This is the research thesis in which a topic of choice is explored in depth generating new knowledge. It will draw on the learning from all the other modules and will be supported by the essays generated as assignments for those models, which will constitute the groundwork for several chapters of the thesis.
The project could be empirical, theoretical or historical. The first year will enable students to refine their research question, develop an appropriate research design, and establish their chosen methodology. Years 2 will largely be devoted to conducting the project, with most of year 3 dedicated to processing the data and generating results, findings and conclusions. It will include some reflection on the research experience, with attention paid to the process of becoming a researcher.
The aims of this module are:
- To support students in conducting their research and producing an effective thesis.
By the end of the module, students will be expected to:
- Have knowledge of research literature in their field and an understanding of how this Have knowledge relates to their research question (A1)
- Have knowledge of different research methodologies and an understanding of how this knowledge relates to their chosen area of research (A3)
- Have in-depth knowledge of chosen topic (A4)
- Have an ability to choose relevant methodology (B1)
- Have an understanding of ethical issues involved in research (B2)
- Have an ability to understand applications of research to depth psychotherapy / psychodynamic counselling (B3)
- Have an ability to conduct rigorous literature review (C1)
- Have an ability to adopt and apply research methodology (C2)
- Have an ability to write extended thesis on topic of research (C4)
- Communication (D1)
- Information Technology (D2)

There will be regular forums for doctoral research presentations and students are expected to participate in these.
It is also expected that each student will present at least once at the postgraduate research forum and/or conference.
There will be monthly supervisions for all students and monthly workshops for year 2 students throughout year 2 and there will be monthly workshops for year 3 students throughout year 3.
