This is a two-year module designed to help you take ownership of your professional development. It is taught as LW111 Career Development Learning (Part I) in your first year and as LW211 Career Development Learning (Part II) in your second year. The module will prepare you for some of the opportunities and challenges of the graduate labour market, whether you want to work in law or in a different sector.
In LW111, we will:
- Explore a range of influences on career choices
- Increase your awareness of career decision making and career planning
- Help you to develop an understanding of career management skills
- Introduce you to reflective practice
- Help you to increase self-awareness in order to enhance your career management capabilities
- Increase your understanding of key skills and competencies and their impact on your career choices
The aims of this module are:
- Understand your motivations, values and drivers.
- Reflect on your skills, strengths and limitations to support your personal and professional development.
- Identify your development needs and monitor your progress.
- Recognise and create opportunities for development and change.
- Understand the routes to qualification (solicitor, barrister, CILEX) and non-law pathways.
- Understand the key skills required in a range of professions.
- Know where to find careers support and guidance.
By the end of the first year, a student should:
- Understand the key skills and competencies expected of a law graduate.
- Be able to identify key personal factors that inform their values, motivations and career choices.
- Be able to identify the key skills and competencies developed through work experience, paid employment and volunteering.
- Have started a PDP or career action plan and understand how this may change over time.
This module will:
- Explore what is expected of a law graduate
- Explore a range of influences on career choices (e.g. values, motivations)
- Increase awareness of career decision-making and career planning
- Help students to develop an understanding of career management skills
- Introduce students to reflective practice
- Increase self-awareness to enhance career management capabilities
- Increase understanding of key skills and competencies and their impact on career choices
The module is taught over two years (as LW111 in the first year of your degree and as LW211 in the second year of your degree). The lectures cover the compulsory/key material for this module and will be supported by a series of online tasks that you need to complete.

- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
