MA P50012 International Journalism
This module focuses on visual storytelling. It starts with photography since composition, lighting, and subject are fundamental to all visual stories. Students are then introduced to the element of motion through mobile journalism. The module ends with rigorous training in editing techniques. Throughout, students will deconstruct and analyze the best works of visual storytelling so they can adapt or incorporate the same ideas for their own stories.
This is a practice-based module in which students will learn photography and the editorial, technical and organisational aspects of online video production.
Working individually or in teams, students will develop and produce video content for narrative reportage.
Students will build a visual storytelling vocabulary, develop advanced composition skills, and learn to work with light and motion. The emphasis will be on agility so that students can produce high quality video using a light and dynamic setup.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Develop visual storytelling skills through photography and motion pictures.
- Demonstrate command of professional production skills, techniques, practices, and materials associated with journalism.
- Produce visual journalism across different media in a wide and often unpredictable variety of professional contexts.

The module will be delivered in 10 weekly sessions that include a one hour lecture followed by a 2 hour workshop. Drop in sessions will provide students with extra support.

- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
