Higher Intermediate Mandarin Chinese is an interactive, intensive language module using blended-learning strategies to allow fast-paced progress through the Mandarin Chinese language and Mandarin Chinese-speaking world. It is a reinforcement and continuation of LA922, Intensive Initial Mandarin Chinese 2. It is a practical module which makes use of a wide range of textbook and online materials depicting real-life situations and activities.
The aim of the module is to enable students to attain a level of Mandarin Chinese equivalent to equivalent to an B1/B2 level.
It is the compulsory path for those students with initial preliminary knowledge of Mandarin Chinese who intend to take the study of the language to a Higher Intermediate/Advanced level in their second/final year. This module can also be taken as an outside option.
The aim of Higher Intermediate Mandarin Chinese is to help students consolidate and improve their proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, including their ability to deal with everyday situations, language abilities to social in Chinese, including introducing some Chinese cultural customs including some Chinese sayings. This module is to enable students to study in a happy, relaxed mood but also a very highly efficient way.
By the end of the module, students will be able to
1. Understand and use a wider range of expressions to engage in daily dialogues and reading of story books or normal life
2. Start to engage in reading small essays and narrating events as a third person.
3. Provide plans and express determinations and requirements.
4. Understand some common custom Chinese cultural sayings.
5. use more complex ways of expressions during a conversation.
6. make compound sentences using specific conjunctions.
7. understand more of the authentic Chinese when watching a Chinese film or television show.
8. Carry out writing tasks not only about personal life, but also about media, culture, plan, work, and business.
This module is using combination of teaching with homework, teaching practical and effective ways of speaking in diverse situations, maintaining a natural and humorous atmosphere in the text design.
The learning and teaching is conducted in classrooms as a face-to-face teaching on campus.
There are four weekly contact hours, to provide students with opportunities to progress through the structural aspects of the language at their own pace. Class time is dedicated to the introduction of new concepts and focuses on creating practice opportunities for the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
Students will be expected to attend all sessions and to complete some relevant practical tasks for each session.

- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
