This module focuses on the skills acquisition of advanced simultaneous interpreting: SI with text. SI-text is a more challenging mode of SI in comparison with SI without text. Foundational practice of sight translation, Source Text (ST) analysis, discourse and register analysis, and terminology acquisition will be integrated to improve the learners' coordination between different inputs from speech drafts, text-dense slides and listening. At the end of the module learning, students are expected to develop appropriate and flexible strategies for SI-text tasks and achieve the balance of sight reading, listening, and delivering under simultaneous interpreting mode.
At the end of the module, students will be assessed on English to Chinese, Chinese to English SI-text and sight translation.
This module aims to reinforce the interpreting skills and strategies acquired from LA894 and further improve the interpreting quality and pre-task preparation efficiency.
Achieve advanced level of simultaneous interpreting strategies and techniques
Achieve advanced level of consecutive interpreting strategies and techniques at bilateral settings (i.e. Q&A session and press conference)
Further develop flexible translation techniques for the purpose of accurate interpreting
Gain conference/meeting organising experience and essential communication skills
Expand schematic knowledge and corresponding terminologies with selected themes and topics
Understanding difference between spoken and written discourse; analysing speeches from phonological and semantic perspectives
Apply appropriate register/style according to working environment and context
Professional evaluation on personal performance and peer performance
Mock conference, presentation, imitation, public speaking, audio recording analysis, and peer feedback
