This module focuses on the skills acquisition of advanced simultaneous interpreting, SI with text. Practice will be based on translation practice, Source Text (ST) analysis, discourse and register analysis, and terminology building. At the end of the module learning, students are expected to develop appropriate and flexible strategies for SI-text tasks and achieve the balance of reading, listening and delivering under simultaneous interpreting mode. Simultaneous interpreting without text is also covered in this module in the designed learning activities.
At the end of the module, students will be assessed on English to Chinese and Chinese to English simultaneous interpreting with text.
• Prepare students for professional simultaneous interpreting jobs at the conference setting
• Develop advanced simultaneous interpreting skills for SI-text tasks
• Build knowledge schemas
At the end of this module, the students are expected to:
• be able to simultaneously interpret speeches/talks with provided text/documentations
• be able to prepare for the SI-text with short time preparation
• the ability to interpret fast speed reading speech
• apply skills and strategies to deliver meaningful messages to listeners, for example:
the multitasking skill
the skills and strategies of sentences segmentation
the skills and strategies of interpreting numbers under SI mode
presentation skills for the purpose of SI
Verbalization, description and articulation under SI mode
• have the ability to self-analyse personal and peer’s interpreting performances
