Module description

This module is intended for students who have successfully completed basic skill training of consecutive interpreting (CI) and aim to further their skills in preparation for working in the professional field. The module is aiming to further consolidate and polish the comprehensive CI skills and strategies acquired in the module of Consecutive Interpreting. Professionalism and work ethics of an interpreter will also be a focus of training in this stage.
The module will mainly be in the form of mini-mock conferences with emphasis on practical skills. The aim is to develop professional proficiency in advanced consecutive interpreting skills, background knowledge, and ability, at different stages, to carry out consecutive interpreting assignments. It also aims to raise the awareness of the current developments around the world and the trends in the language service profession.
One CI mock conference will be organized in each term to provide you with a platform for putting what you have learned in class into a real-time interpreting performance. You will not only take part as interpreters but also work as conference organizers, speakers, master of ceremonies (MCs) and attentive audience who will provide feedback to your peers.

Module aims

The aims of this module are as follows:
• To polish your practical ability to interpret between English and Chinese and vice versa through a wide variety of tasks.
• To develop intermediate and high level of competence and effective strategies for CI.
• You will consolidate the following interpreting skills:
o Effective pre-tasking preparation ability
o Background knowledge of different fields
o Coordinate your background knowledge with interpreting skills
o Risk and speech anxiety management
o Active-listening under fast speech rate
o Note-taking consolidation,
e.g., balance note-taking and comprehension source texts with a high level of difficulty
o Grasping the logical development and ‘sense’ of the source speech
o Identifying discourse markers and key words
o Self and peer evaluation
• To get you accustomed to computer-aided tools for self and paired-up training.
• To work with interpreting partners and clients under different circumstances and types of assignments.
• To efficiently prepare for an assignment while communicating with the event organizer and knowing where to obtain resources that will facilitate interpreting.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, you will demonstrate the following skills:
• To improve competence and acquire strategies in English-Chinese and Chinese-English CI.
• To be able to adopt interpreting strategies in challenging circumstances to ensure the quality of performance.
• To be able to interpret speeches of 4-5 minutes per segment and with medium to high level of difficulty.
• To be able to manage potential risk in interpreting and speech anxiety.
• To have good communication skills to work with partners, clients, speakers and the know-how to use AV tools.
• To be able to conduct effective pre-task preparation based on critical awareness of the different roles people play at a conference.
• To be able to record and evaluate your performance in weekly self and paired-up training.
To be able to think and act according to professional code of conduct and work ethics from the beginning of accepting an interpreting case and throughout the process.

Learning and teaching methods

To ensure the best result of the module, the duration of each class will be 3 hours. To consolidate CI skills, class formats may include the following: 1) recorded and live presentations in Chinese and English on various political, legal, technical topics and etc, 2) risk and anxiety management – different strategies to deal with intensive information and digits, 3) workshops and seminars 4) mock conferences, 5) invited speakers 6) field trips and others Both teacher and students shall give feedback on the interpretation performed in this class.
