Module description

This module aims to introduce the basic concepts and skills required in consecutive interpreting (CI) to beginners. The basic CI skills include: active listening; quick understanding and processing of the main ideas of the speech; note-taking/memory; pre-task preparation (i.e. research, background knowledge and terminology-building); the ability to produce accurate and concise interpreting which is grammatically correct, and faithful to the register and appropriate for the style of the speaker; public speaking skills (projection, posture, style, pacing, overcoming nervous habits, withstanding pressure); the ability to provide and receive constructive criticism; the ability to monitor one's own work and identify and learn from mistakes made; adaptability in challenging and changing circumstances; and the ability to work with speakers, colleagues, texts, and AV tools. In addition, this module is to help beginners of CI become familiarized with and interested in general topics such as trade, politics, economics and current affairs.

We will organize one CI mock conference in each term to provide you with a platform for putting what you have learned in class into real-time interpreting performance. You will not only take part as interpreters but also work as conference organizers, speakers, master of ceremonies (MCs) and benefit from an attentive audience who will provide feedback to your peers.

Module aims

The aims of this module are as follows:
• To develop your practical ability to interpret between English and Chinese and vice versa through a wide variety of tasks.
• To develop basic skills, competence and strategies for CI that prepares you for further development in the intermediate level with comprehensive skills.
• To get you accustomed to computer-aided tools for self and paired-up training.
• To work with interpreting partners and clients under different circumstances and types of assignments.
• To efficiently prepare for an assignment while communicating with the event organizer and knowing where to obtain resources that will facilitate interpreting.
• To acquire basic background knowledge of the common fields.
You will develop the following interpreting skills:
o Active-listening
o Information processing
o Short-term memory
o Grasping the logical development and sense of the source speech
o Note-taking
o Self and peer evaluation

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, you will demonstrate the following skills:
• To develop competence and acquire strategies in English-Chinese (E-C) and Chinese- English (C-E) CI.
• To be able to adopt some interpreting strategies in challenging circumstances to ensure the quality of performance.
• To be able to interpret speeches and dialogues of 2-3 minutes per segment and with medium level of difficulty.
• To develop communication skills to work with partners, clients, speakers and the know- how to use AV tools.
• To be able to conduct effective pre-task preparation based on critical awareness of the different roles people play in a conference.
• To be able to record and evaluate your performance in weekly self and paired-up training.

Learning and teaching methods

To ensure the best result of the module, the duration of each class will be 3 hours. To consolidate CI skills, class formats may include the following: 1) recorded and live presentations in Chinese and English on various political, legal, technical topics and etc, 2) risk and anxiety management – different strategies to deal with intensive information and digits, 3) workshops and seminars 4) mock conferences, 5) invited speakers, 6) field trips and others Both teacher and students shall give feedback on the interpretation performed in this class.
