Module description

This module is tailored for students who have completed LAX41 or an equivalent (e.g., B1+/B2.1 of CEFR). The module focuses on expanding the students’ vocabulary, the use of advanced grammatical structures and recognising idiomatic expressions. Through exposure to authentic texts, films and conversations with native speakers, students will acquire a wider knowledge of the culture and society of the countries where the language is spoken.


The module helps students improve their reading comprehension skills by exposing them to complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics. Students will be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity with native speakers without strain for either party. Students will be able to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To reach the equivalent of a B2.1/B2.2 in the European common framework of reference for languages.

  • To widen the students’ knowledge of the culture and history of the countries where the language is spoken.

  • To equip students with advanced and specific vocabulary related to topics around current affairs, controversial social issues and other cultural topics from the countries of the target language.

  • To enable students to understand complex texts and aural materials by improving their reading and aural skills.

  • To develop students’ confidence and competence at expressing themselves both in writing and speaking in the target language, discussing abstract ideas and controversial topics without much strain.

  • To develop and reinforce students’ transferable skills such as presentation skills, independent and collaborative learning strategies, public speaking and critical thinking.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Communicate about topical subjects in a sophisticated manner both in writing and orally.

  2. Use the appropriate vocabulary and a wide range of grammatical structures.

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of films and news reports in the target language at the speed spoken in a natural context.

  4. Demonstrate the use of transferable skills such as intercultural awareness, language mediation skills, time management, presentation skills and effective use of electronic media.

To reach the equivalent of a B2.1/B2.2 in the European Common Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • 4 weekly contact hours (3 weekly contact hours when fewer than 20 students per group).

Students will be required to self-study for an extra 7 hours per week. Students are expected to study grammar, vocabulary and do the homework related to those. Students are expected to undertake the reading before classes and prepare for oral sessions, which can consist of debates, role-plays or presentations.
