Italian Intensive Initial 2 is an interactive, intensive language module for which blended-learning strategies are used to allow fast-paced progress through the Italian language and Italian-speaking world. It is a reinforcement and continuation of LA621, Italian Intensive Initial 1. It is a practical module, which makes use of a wide range of authentic materials depicting real-life situations and activities.
The aim of the module is to enable students to attain a level of Italian equivalent to an A2 level. By completing it, with a summer course in Italy students will reach an intermediate exit level B1 (equivalent to higher Intermediate); without attending the course in Italy the exit level will be elementary A2.
It is the compulsory path for those students with no knowledge of Italian who intend to take the study of the language to a Proficiency or Mastery level in their final year. This module can also be taken as an outside option.
The aim is to help students consolidate and improve their proficiency in Italian, including their ability to deal with everyday situations in a natural and creative way with greater awareness of correctness, register and propriety
Students will have the opportunity to practise and expand transferable skills such as intercultural awareness and language mediation skills, communication and presentation skills, independent learning, creative and analytical thinking, reflective skills, problem-solving, team-working, disciplined time-management, research skills and use of electronic media.

By the end of the module, students will be able to:
1. devise/ take part in a dialogue in the context of a range of everyday situations;
2. deliver a longer oral presentation in Italian to express feelings, opinions and belief;
3. carry out listening and reading comprehension tasks;
4. carry out various writing tasks (e.g. more extensive descriptions and narratives, reference to past experience and events, make present and future plans), making pertinent lexical and grammatical choices

An inductive approach, complemented by a variety of activities, which aim to facilitate the learning of the Italian language structures and functions.
Five weekly contact hours, including one hour in a PC lab (or similar environment) to provide students with opportunities to progress through the structural aspects of the language at their own pace. Class time is dedicated to the introduction of new concepts and focuses on creating practice opportunities for the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
Students will also attend one hour a week of oral skills practical session and homework check, and a total of 8 hours of task based oral skills with mentor or teacher.
If no mentors were to be available, students will need to attend 8 hours, over the term, of tandem session with native speakers practising task-based conversations.
Students will be expected to attend all sessions and complete some relevant practical tasks for each session.
