This module is tailored for students who have completed LAX22 (Intensive Beginners II) and the summer course, or LAx31 (Intermediate II) or an equivalent (e.g., A2+/B1 of CEFR). The module focuses on consolidating some of the basic grammar by expanding vocabulary and improving listening and oral skills. Through exposure to authentic texts, films and conversations with native speakers, students will acquire a wider knowledge of the culture and society of the countries where the language is spoken.
The module helps students improve their listening skills by exposing them to different accents. Students will also improve their presentation skills and learn to develop their arguments in a convincing manner. Ultimately, this module will enhance all the language skills and deepen the students understanding of the language intricacies and the culture of the countries of the target language.
The aims of this module are:
- To reach the equivalent of a B1+/B2.1 in the European Common Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages.
- To widen the students’ knowledge of the culture and history of the countries and regions where the language is spoken.
- To equip students with advanced and specific vocabulary related to topics around current affairs and other cultural topics from the countries of the target language.
- To enable students to understand fairly complex texts and aural materials and improve reading and aural skills.
- To develop students’ confidence and competence at expressing themselves in both written and spoken in the target language.
- To develop and reinforce students’ transferable skills such as presentation skills, independent and collaborative learning strategies, public speaking and critical thinking.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Communicate about topical subjects in a sophisticated manner both in writing and orally.
- Use the appropriate vocabulary and a wide range of grammatical structures.
- Demonstrate an understanding of films and news reports in the target language at the speed spoken in a natural context.
- Demonstrate the use of transferable skills such as intercultural awareness, language mediation skills, time management, presentation skills and effective use of electronic media.

This module will be delivered via:
- 4 weekly contact hours (3 weekly contact hours when fewer than 20 students per group).
Students will be required to self-study for an extra 7 hours per week. Students are expected to study grammar, vocabulary and do the homework related to those. Students are expected to undertake the reading before classes and prepare for oral sessions, which can consist of debates, role-plays or presentations.
