Module description

Intermediate Spanish I is designed for students with some pre-existing knowledge of the language. It is available either as a progression from Intensive Beginners II LAX22 for modern languages students, or via an online placement test for students in other departments.

Classes are very interactive and will help improve oral and written communication as well as learning strategies. Learning will be supported by a textbook and a tailored, language-specific Moodle page. The module can be completed on its own or can be followed by Intermediate Spanish II in the following term, depending on the degree progression.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:

  • To achieve proficiency in the language equivalent to level A2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in speaking, writing, reading, and listening.

  • To develop awareness of study skills for languages, such as vocabulary building.

  • To practise and expand transferable skills, such as communication strategies, use of technology, independent learning.

  • To provide students with an introduction to intercultural awareness and language mediation.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of concepts of intercultural awareness and language mediation.

  2. Use vocabulary to describe people, events, order food and shop.

  3. Write and summarise brief passages at A2+ level.

  4. Understand instructions and descriptions at A2+ level.

  5. Talk about present and past events.

  6. Collaborate effectively with peers in group work, demonstrating leadership and teamwork skills.

In addition to all the above, students at Level 6 (Final Year) will be expected to:

  7. Critically evaluate the language learning process.

  8. Reflect on personal and professional growth in relation to language and intercultural skills for future career development.

Module information

To achieve proficiency in the language equivalent to level A2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in speaking, writing, reading, and listening.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • 3 weekly contact hours (or 2 weekly contact hours if there are fewer than 8 students in the module).

Students are expected to attend classes and take part in classroom activities by engaging in independent, peer and group work. A dedicated Moodle page will be made accessible: students may be invited to complete work beforehand to take full advantage of their classes. We recommend that students should dedicate approximately 7 hours per week to self-study.
