Module description

This module is designed for students wishing to major in the language and exit at the highest specialist (Mastery) level (level C1 or C2) by the end of their course. The content deals with the structures of the Spanish language from basic to advanced level. You will learn the necessary structures to communicate at a reasonably advanced level, both oral and written.
A consolidation Course in Valencia, Spain (4 weeks) during the month of September before the start of the second year is a compulsory component and a pre-requisite for continuing with the follow-on Advanced Spanish module. Students will live with a Spanish host family and will undertake an intensive language course at our partner language school [Españole International House]. Students will reach level B2.

Module aims

The module is designed to take students with no (or little) previous knowledge of Spanish to level B1 in 9 months of intensive study.

Module learning outcomes

The following learning outcomes are attained:

- The ability to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, university and leisure.
- The development of written skills in texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
- The ability to express opinions, hopes, plans for the future both in written and spoken Spanish.
- An understanding of the varieties of Spanish.
A greater understanding of Hispanic culture and awareness of some of the key cultural practices, icons and their work.

Module information

A summer vacation course (4 weeks in Valencia, Spain) is a compulsory component of this double module and necessary for progression into LA440 Advanced Spanish in year 2

Learning and teaching methods

3 x 1 hr classes per week, 22 teaching weeks. (taken in conjunction with LA422 – also 3 x 1 hours per week for 22 weeks)
