Requisites for this module
This module is designed for students wishing to major in the language and exit at the highest specialist (Mastery) level (approximate level C1 or C2) by the end of their course. The content deals with the structures of the Spanish language from basic to advanced level. You will learn the necessary structures to communicate at a reasonably advanced level, both oral and written.
The module is designed to take students with no (or little) previous knowledge of Spanish to level A1/2 by the end of the Autumn term
The following learning outcomes are attained:
- The ability to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, university and leisure.
- The development of written skills in texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
- The ability to use the present and past tenses in both written and oral communication.
- An understanding of the varieties of Spanish.
A greater understanding of Hispanic culture and awareness of some of the key cultural practices, icons and their work.
A summer vacation course (4 weeks in Valencia, Spain) is a compulsory component of this double module for specialist ML students intending to spend their Year Abroad in a Spanish speaking country and/or for whom Spanish is the major language. It is necessary for progression into LA440 Advanced Spanish in year 2.
Students taking this module as an outside option or minor pathway may decide to not continue with LA422 in the Spring term or alternatively to progress into LA430 Higher Intermediate Spanish in year 2 without attendance on the summer vacation course.

- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
