Module description

This module is intended for students of all departments with an outside option in their course structure, leading from no knowledge in Spanish to a level equivalent to CEFR A2.1. Students will consolidate their acquisition of fundamental language skills in Spanish alongside a focus on some professional skills such as summarising and reporting, filtering written and spoken material and business communication.


Students will develop an understanding of some of the working environments and cultural backgrounds in a number of Spanish speaking countries. They will obtain the tools to enhance their employability via transferable skills.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To enable students to acquire post initial Spanish language skills equivalent to CEFR A2.1.

  • To enable students to further develop essential skills for the job market.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Read and produce intermediate level texts, some with a focus on the business world.

  2. Demonstrate post initial level oral presentation skills in Spanish.

  3. Summarise and report on written material.

  4. Create presentation material using authentic and own materials.

  5. Demonstrate intercultural awareness and an understanding of significant similarities and differences across the Spanish speaking world.

  6. Link academic knowledge with practical employability skills.

    In addition to all the above, students at Level 6 (Final Year) will be expected to:



  7. Demonstrate transferable skills for the job market, such as analysing, summarising, reporting, presenting and communicating. Use initiative, show confidence and a level of intercultural understanding.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • 3 weekly contact hours plus 5 hours self-study.

Students are expected to undertake the reading before classes and be prepared to engage in discussion.

Assessment will consist of two written class tests and one oral assessment e.g. oral presentation.
