This module is intended for students of all departments with an outside option in their course structure, leading from no knowledge in Spanish to a level equivalent to CEFR A1.1. Students will acquire fundamental language skills in Spanish alongside a focus on professional skills such as summarising and reporting, filtering written and spoken material, business communication, giving simple but professional oral presentations in Spanish.
Students will develop an understanding of some of the working environments and cultural backgrounds in a number of Spanish speaking countries. They will obtain the tools to enhance their employability via transferable skills.
The aims of this module are:
- To enable students to acquire initial basic Spanish language skills equivalent to CEFR A1.1.
- To enable students to develop essential skills for the job market.
- To provide students with an introduction to business Spanish.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Read and write basic-level business related texts. For vocabulary, students will manage their own learning.
- Demonstrate basic oral presentation skills in Spanish, summarising and reporting on written material, creating presentation material using authentic and own materials.
- Demonstrate listening skills in Spanish via filtering and summarising essential content from authentic Spanish audio and video material. Employ decision making regarding the inclusion of relevant information.
- Demonstrate intercultural awareness relevant for business environments in a variety of different Spanish speaking countries. This includes analysing, reflecting and commenting on similarities and differences.
- Link academic knowledge with practical employability skills.
In addition to the above, students at Level 5 (Year 2) will be expected to:
- Demonstrate basic written skills in Spanish, summarising and reporting on written material, creating presentation material using authentic and own materials.
- Demonstrate transferable skills for the job market, such as analysing, summarising, reporting, presenting and communicating.

- 3 weekly contact hours plus 5 hours self-study.
Students are expected to undertake the reading before classes and be prepared to engage in discussion.

Assessment will consist of one written class test and one oral assessment e.g. oral presentation on a business topic.
Exam format definitions
- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
