The module aims to develop students' language skills in Portuguese (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) to an advanced level of ability and help them gain further insight into aspects of the culture and society of the Portuguese-speaking countries. Students will consolidate their knowledge of tenses in the indicative and the subjunctive and learn to use more complex sentences and structures as well as idioms and expressions. They will be working with longer texts from a range of media, including lectures, TV news and current affair programmes and films, and short literary texts. By the end of the module, students are expected to reach a B2+/C1 level in Portuguese.
This module is designed to further develop and consolidate advanced language skills in Portuguese through different aspects of culture and society of the Portuguese-speaking countries.
At the end of the module students should
• have enhanced linguistics skills by means of studying more complex grammatical structures and expanded their lexical in Portuguese through reading texts from a variety of genres and registers;
• be able to interact in everyday oral situations as well as in discussions on specialized topics with due regard for register and setting;
• be able to analyse texts in Portuguese from a variety of genres and understand key complex structures;
• demonstrate critical understanding, critical evaluation, and synthesis of aural texts in the form of dialogues, interviews, documentaries, films etc.
• demonstrate critical awareness of key aspects of culture and society of the Portuguese-speaking countries.
• have developed academic, transferable study skills such as independent learning, critical, analytical thinking, problem-solving, team-working, planning and delivering oral presentations, time-management, and use of electronic media.
By the end of the module, students are expected to reach a B2+/C1 level in Portuguese.
The academic year for this module, runs from academic week 2 to 11 (Autumn term), and from academic week 16 to 25 (Spring term), and finally academic weeks 30 and 31 (Spring term). There is a reading week in Week 20. A 30-credit module comprises 300 hours of preparation, reading, and learning time. This module offers three weekly hours over the academic year, making up a total of 63 hours. The rest of the time (237 hours) is dedicated to preparation and reading times, as well as independent learning time.
Teaching methods will involve individual and group work, as well as class presentations. Besides the classes, students will need to work independently for an average of 6 hours a week to complete the work set in order to fully meet the outcomes.
