This accelerated introductory Portuguese module is especially devised for students with A-level Spanish/Italian/Romanian/French knowledge or equivalent (e.g. B2 of the Common European Framework). It is also open to native speakers of these languages.
It aims to develop written, aural/oral and reading skills in Portuguese to an advanced level (exit level comparable to Threshold Level B1 of the Common European Framework). Students will also be introduced to aspects of cultures and society in Portuguese-speaking countries through the use of authentic texts.
At the end of the module students should be able to
• Understand and evaluate the gist of short texts from newspapers and magazines and short literary texts.
• Write letters and short compositions on different non-specialized topics.
• Interact in everyday oral situations.
• Understand the gist of aural texts in the form of dialogues, interviews etc.
• Appreciate key facets of the Portuguese world, its cultural and social realities and develop intellectual skills through critical reading of authentic texts.
• Develop academic, transferable study skills such as independent learning, problem-solving, team-working, time-management, use of electronic media.

The academic year for this module, runs from academic week 2 to 11 (Autumn term), and from academic week 16 to 25 (Spring term), and finally academic weeks 30 and 31 (Spring term). There is a reading week in Week 20. A 30-credit module comprises 300 hours of preparation, reading, and learning time. This module offers four weekly hours over the academic year, making up a total of 84 hours. The rest of the time (216 hours) is dedicated to preparation and reading times, as well as independent learning time.
Teaching methods will involve individual and group work, as well as class presentations. Besides the classes, students will need to work independently for an average of 6 hours a week to complete the work set in order to fully meet the outcomes.
