Module description

Advanced Level French is an interactive language module, using a flipped-classroom approach for students with pre-existing knowledge of French language equivalent to A'level in French (not reaching yet B2 level in French). This module aims at enhancing your language learning skills at University and at improving further your French language skills (oral, written, mediation). In order to benefit actively from this module, students will be expected to carry out work beforehand in order to obtain in-class feedback. This approach will allow you to reach B1+/B2 level in French.

Module aims

This module aims at developing further your knowledge of French language, through five skills (i.e. written and oral comprehension, written and oral production, and mediation). This module’s purpose is to enhance your strong foundation in French, in view to joining the module, LA150 Proficiency Level French, the following year, and possibly to going abroad the following year.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should have:
• Consolidated their knowledge regarding the structure of the French language, acquired in their previous teaching of French language;
• Acquired a greater knowledge and understanding of culture in French-speaking countries, and an increased awareness of cultural issues;
• Increased their confidence, fluency and accuracy in their linguistic skills in French;
• Developed academic, transferable study skills (such as independent learning, critical and analytical thinking, etc.).

Module information

By the end of the module, students will have ideally reached the level B2 or B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

Learning and teaching methods

There are three weekly hours over 21 weeks (academic week 2 to 11, academic week 16 to 25, and academic week 30), including two “reading weeks”. The module aims are achieved through a range of activities, both in class (3 contact hours per week) and outside class, with the use of a dedicated online learning platform (Moodle). Didacticised or authentic (textual or audio or audiovisual) materials are used primarily as a basis for discussion and presentations (oral and written) in class, but are also used for listening and reading comprehension, analysis of content and language, development and consolidation of vocabulary and grammar. They include media reports, books, films, etc. Students’ work is reinforced by feedback from staff in class, during academic support hours, or online. Please note that there will be two “reading weeks” in weeks 6 (autumn term) and 20 (spring term), during which there will be no classes. However you will be expected to undertake some additional guided self-study and may be required to attend some learning events. 1. First class 21 1 per week 1 hour 21 h 2.
