The overall objective of the module is to develop the variety of skills which constitute competence in a foreign language at University level. More specifically, students can expect to:
Develop confidence and competence at expressing themselves in both written and spoken French;
Be able to appreciate, summarise and evaluate ideas, arguments and conclusions in a text;
Improve their aural comprehension and learn the basic skills of oral improvisation;
Revise and reinforce their basic knowledge of the grammar and the vocabulary of French;
Extend their knowledge of social and cultural aspects of France and some of the regions/countries in which French is spoken.
With this module students can expect to:

• Revise and reinforce their basic knowledge of the grammar and the vocabulary of French;
• Extend their knowledge of social and cultural aspects of France and some of the regions/countries in which French is spoken;
• Develop and/or reinforce a range of transferable skills such as presentation skills, independent and collaborative learning strategies, public speaking and critical thinking.
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
• Demonstrate a good understanding and appropriate use of French grammar and vocabulary;
• Demonstrate an understanding of both written and spoken French, in different registers and styles;
• Express themselves clearly and fluently in both written and spoken French in both formal and informal situations;
• Develop an awareness of current issues in French-speaking countries through the use of contemporary material and literary texts.
MOODLE
Materials placed on Moodle are essential to the module and should be treated like a textbook. They must be downloaded, printed and brought to classes. Materials will be added to Moodle when needed, and you are expected to check updates regularly.
GENERAL FACILITIES AVAILABLE
Foreign language newspapers and magazines are available in the Language and Linguistics Common Room (4.305A).
Cinema: a wide range of films on video/DVD is available for viewing from the University library, check the library catalogue (https://library.essex.ac.uk/home).
A range of language community events are organised by the department (e.g. Language Café) throughout the year, look out for emails with information.
Language modules typically involve 2-3 contact hours per week. Confirmed details will be announced at the start of the academic year.
The module aims are achieved through a range of activities, both in class (3 contact hours per week) and outside, with the use of a dedicated online learning platform (Moodle). Authentic (textual oraudiovisual) materials are used for listening and reading comprehension, analysis of content and language, development and consolidation of vocabulary and grammar, and as a basis for discussion and presentations (oral and written). They include media reports, books, films, etc. Students’ work is reinforced by feedback from staff in class, in office hours, or online.
