MLANR990 Modern Languages (Translation)
Building on the knowledge and skills gained in their language modules, the Language Expert modules and the Year Abroad, students will conduct an independent study, under supervision, on a topic related to the study and practise of translation in their chosen language. The specific topic must be approved by their supervisor. The study culminates in a dissertation of 6,000 words, consisting of a 2,000 word translation into English and a 4,000 word commentary written in the target language.
With this module, students can expect to develop their ability to conduct high level independent research, to work with varied and complex sources of information in the target language, to employ a variety of different research methods, to develop analytical thinking and problem-solving skills and to expand their linguistic and translation skills and communication proficiency in the foreign language and English language. They will undertake modules in translation theory and practice during their period of Study Abroad in order to support and contribute to their understanding of the subject.
On completing the module, they will have a greater understanding of how to employ translation theory and practice, conduct independent research, gather information, and report the results of research. They will have reached mastery level proficiency (C2) in their foreign language. They will have acquired the structures and self-discipline necessary to manage their research and the timely production of drafts before a final project is produced. They will be well prepared to undertake translation modules in their final year.
Summer term before YAB
2 x 1 hour supervision sessions will take place in the Summer Term prior to you leaving Essex and you will submit your project proposal in week 42 before commencing your YAB You will then be in contact with the supervisor via email for the duration of the YAB. There will be one Zoom interview per term between you and your supervisor. You will also undertake independent study.
You will have received study skills/research methods/ academic writing preparation in modules in the first and second years respectively (through your completion of Language Expert 1 and 2). In addition your project will be supported by the translation modules that you take during your YAB.
Year Abroad
Term 1:
* Translating the source text that you chose at the proposal stage
* Identifying the main translation challenges that will be the focus of your commentary. You will identify sources of information and draw up a plan for further reading.
* You will plan and then conduct the necessary literature review and will submit a dissertation plan and bibliography.
* You will submit a translation draft (2000 words) for formative feedback.
Term 2:
* You will receive feedback from your module supervisor and will refine your translation accordingly.
* You will receive guidance from your supervisor on how to proceed with the literature review.
* You will go on to write up the literature review, taking on board comments from your supervisor.
* You will submit the Literature Review (2000 words) for summative feedback.
Term 3:
* You will receive further guidance on how to proceed with the commentary section.
* You will complete the project incorporating comments from your supervisor.
* A contents page, annotations/bibliography, appendices etc should all be added at this stage.
Materials placed on Moodle are essential to the module and should be treated like a textbook.. Materials will be added to Moodle when needed, and you are expected to check updates regularly.
* A combination of individual supervision in person and by email, and independent study.
* Access (via Moodle) to materials for the final year LA067 module at Essex University, which provides an introduction to translation theory and practice.
* 2 individual supervision sessions in the summer term of Year 2, before leaving for the Year Abroad.
* 1 individual supervision sessions on Zoom in both autumn term and spring term.
Term 0: – Summer Term prior to Year Abroad:
* Select a 2,000 word text to translate and email a suggestion to the language supervisor.
* With the help of the supervisor, identify main translation challenges, sources of information and start independent research.
* Send a draft proposal to the supervisor in week 40.
* Complete a written Project Proposal* of 400 words and submit it on Moodle by week 42. This will count for 10% of the overall mark for the dissertation.
Term 1:

* Attend an individual session with the supervisor.
* Submit a translation draft for formative feedback by week 12.
Term 2:
* Revise the draft in the light of the supervisor's feedback.
* Attend an individual session with the supervisor.
* Write up the literature review and the methodology, taking on board comments from your supervisor.
* Submit 2,000 words of the commentary for summative feedback by week 26.
Term 3:
* Revise the commentary in the light of the supervisor's feedback and continue writing it.
* Attend an individual session with the supervisor.
* Complete the project incorporating comments from your supervisor.
* Finalise and submit the 6,000 word dissertation, including content page, annotations/bibliography, appendices, etc. by Friday 28 July (week 43). This will count for 70% of the overall mark.
* Any subsequent changes to the proposal will have to be agreed by the supervisor and the module director.
