Module description

The module will consist of two components.

a) Translation between French/German/Italian/Portuguese or Spanish and English
We will study the challenges of translating a wide variety of short language specific and English texts, from news and business correspondence to manuals, advertising and newspaper clips, always reflecting on context, target audience and style, analysing and discussing different alternatives.

b) Interpreting
While the main emphasis of this module will be on translation, students will also be introduced to liaison and consecutive interpreting. We will practise public and formal speaking, active and analytical listening, memorising, note-taking and summarising, in preparation for some attempts at interpreting between both languages.

Module aims

The aim of the course is to provide MA students In Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling extra training for their C language. This module will be offered as a complementary module to those students who, apart from English as language A or B and French/German/Italian/Portuguese or Spanish as language A or B, wish/need further training in their English and C language combination. Students will be provided with wide-ranging practical experience of translating different kinds of texts into French/German/Portuguese/Spanish/Italian from English and into English from French/German/Portuguese/Spanish/Italian. This module focuses on practical translation training, with text types and genres all relevant for making good choices on translation. It will also introduce students to basic interpreting skills between English and their C language (German/French/Italian/Portuguese or Spanish).

Module learning outcomes

Students will demonstrate:
1. Translation skills in both source and target languages to a proficient level in different domains using appropriate registers and styles
2. The ability to reflect on context, purpose, target audience and style of texts.
3. Competency in commenting adequately and extensively on translation choices and strategies used to obtain the desired target text
4. A good level of proficiency in both the practices of consecutive and bi-lateral interpreting
5. The ability to deliver public speeches in both source and target languages
6. Enhanced skills of listening actively and analytically, memorising sizeable statements, note-taking, predicting the flow of argument, summarising and condensing, formal expression, and facilitating communication effectively in both source and target languages.
7. Full competency in working productively, resourcefully and efficiently alone or as part of a team.

Module information

This module is taught in language specific strands and can only be taken in one of those strands. The module is open to native or near-native speakers, and a minimum language level of C1 equivalent plus excellent English is required.

Learning and teaching methods

Autumn Term 1 weekly contact hour: - 1 hour translation in form of language specific seminar Spring Term: 2 weekly contact hours: - 2 hours translation/interpreting seminar Self study: Plenty of time of independent study and practice should be devoted to reach the desired outcome. This module requires a strong commitment to independent reading and translation, and independent regular practical training of interpreting skills. Emphasis is on the development of practical skills together with the reflection on underlying issues.

Additional coursework information

Assessment by coursework only. The coursework will consist of two translation tests plus a short commentary, and a bilateral interpreting test. No final exam.
