In the second year of the DClinPsych programme, trainees complete two supervised practice placements (or their equivalent), involving work with people with Intellectual disabilities and children and adolescents (CAMHS). This module (HS771) involves the processes and assessments relating to the development of ten core competencies at a level commensurate with the 2nd year of training and relevant to working with people with Intellectual disabilities and children and adolescents
The two placements, one in a service for children and adolescents and one in a service for people with Intellectual disabilities, aim to develop:
• The knowledge and understanding of the life stage tasks and transition relevant to the client group.
• The ability to link theory to practice in relation to the causes and presentation of psychological problems relevant to the client group.
• An awareness and understanding of the professional, ethical, organisational and legal (including health and safety) frameworks for psychological practice and service delivery with the client group.
• Competencies in assessment of individual, family, social and organisational factors which contribute to psychological problems.
• The ability to use and revise psychological formulations and reformulations to plan, implement and monitor interventions relevant to the client group and related systems and to facilitate the understanding of clients and their care.
• Intervention skills relevant to the client group.
• Values and attitudes contributing to the critical and reflective application of psychological theory and practice to address psychological distress with due consideration of issues relating to cultural diversity, other individual differences and social inequalities.
• Skills in inter-professional collaboration, planning, assessment, formulation and intervention within a multi-disciplinary context and in the context of multi-agency systems.
On successful completion of this module, trainees will be able to draw on a reasonably broad knowledge of a range of psychological models, consolidating their repertoire of core skills (e.g. engagement and relationship skills) and extending formulation and intervention skills to additional client groups; respectively to working in services for children and adolescents and services for people with Intellectual disabilities. Trainees will evidence a growing capacity to identify theory-practice links. Although trainees may still require structured guidance, they will be able to select, structure and organize material presented in increasingly collaborative supervision. Trainees will demonstrate a reflective understanding of their professional role and that of others and of clinical contexts and systems in which they operate. Additionally, they will continue to extend competencies developed in the course of the first year of training including the ability to evidence a growing awareness of ethical issues and a recognition of the impact of diversity on clinical practice.
Trainee clinical psychologists are required to complete placements in the 4 core placement contexts (adults, older adults, children and adolescents and people with Intellectual disabilities) in addition to 2 further 3rd year placements in the course of their training in order to complete the programme. Throughout trainees' placements in the 2nd year, trainees must comply with professional standards as well as with the guidance, policies and procedures of the host trust as well as any specific requirements of their placement provider.
Trainees complete two placements in the course of the 2nd year of training. Further details on practice placements appear in the relevant section on clinical placements in the trainee handbook.
Clinical placements do not involve lectures, but rather provide trainees with the opportunity to draw on theory in their supervised clinical practice on 2 placements (or their equivalent) in the course of the 2nd year of training.
