Module description

To provide evidence that students have successful completed all skills identified in the portfolio with supportive evidence. To show the importance of reflection in the workplace to demonstrate continuous personal and professional development. Both Skills Portfolio 2 module is designed to capture and award credit to learning that takes place on the workplace. The module continues with the concept of continuous reflection on learning and professional development. It focuses on taking ownership and responsibility of learning. This module further promotes autonomy and recognises that each workplace is different. In this module, there is a specific focus on developing additional skills as well as a new skill to be developed in the student’s workplace.

Module aims

To continue with the development of the role of the healthcare worker in the context of a learning continuum in partnership with the workplace and Higher Education. To build on Year 1 skills and to develop the student further with a set of skills to enable them to deliver competent health care. To reflect and use reflective practice to learn and develop personal and professional practice in the workplace.

Module learning outcomes


  1. To work with a registered practitioner regularly to and achieve set learning outcomes for each to meet progression point at the end of term 4, 5 & 6 (Skills 2).

  2. To undertake the prescribed skills in a competent manner (Skills 2).

  3. To continue to use the reflective framework and demonstrate continuous reflection and learning of each skill to demonstrate learning and personal development (Skills 2).

  4. To demonstrate and meet each formative and summative learning outcome, recording personal and professional development and use appropriate evidence (Skills 2).

  5. To take ownership and responsibility for own learning needs in the workplace, continue to show management of time, resources and seeking advice as appropriate (Skills 2).

  6. To plan and develop a new skill in the workplace with their designated supervisor (Skills 2).

  7. To maintain portfolio record, follow succinctly and record all signatures and keep a record on work time (Timesheets).

Module information

Both Skills Portfolio 2 module is designed to capture and award credit to learning that takes place on the workplace. The module builds on Year 1 and continues with the concept of continuous reflection on learning and professional development. Year 2 focuses on taking ownership and responsibility of learning. This module further promotes autonomy and recognises that each workplace is different. In this module, there is a specific focus on developing additional skills as well as a new skill to be developed in the student's workplace.

Learning and teaching methods

This module requires the student to work with their designated supervisor to work towards these skills.

Students studying for the undergraduate pathways will study this module together.

  • Teaching – related lectures will be delivered on key topic during modules running through the programme and linked to skills.
  • Learning – academic level specific sessions will explore topics during the programme.
  • On-Line Discussion – forums / tutorial discussion will be available for the duration of the programme.
  • Moodle – the VLE will contain self-directed reading and support activities.
  • Outcomes – module outcomes are academic level specific
  • Assessment – the assessment strategy involves the same tasks but the level of critical ability required for successful completion will vary dependent on academic level.
