This module will introduce you to the sciences that inform professional practice, including anatomy, physiology, psychology and sociology.
The module aims:
- To promote an understanding of the person as an individual and the interplay between the biopsychosocial functions.
- To explore the genetic and environmental influences on the well-being of an individual.
On successful completion of this module, the learner should be able to:
1. Discuss the biopsychosocial requirements for life and how this can affect the individual across the lifespan
2. Use appropriate terminology to describe the structure and function of the human body systems
3. Draw upon key concepts, principles and theories of psychology to explain cognitive processes and behaviour
4. Draw upon key concepts and theories of sociology to discuss human behaviour within a social context
5. To discuss the health and illness continuum and the differences between illness and disease across the lifespan
6. Contribute to the promotion of health and well-being of individuals and the community.
Physiological functioning and the maintenance of life and well-being including homeostasis, respiration, circulation, digestion and elimination.
Psychological theories that relate to the functioning and behaviour of the individual including identity, learning, perception and memory.
Cultural identity as an explanation of behaviour, including socio-economic status, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, age and spirituality and reproduction of social behaviour.
A variety of teaching methods will be utilised within this module.
Lectures will cover key concepts. These will be supported by practical sessions and the use of simulated practice to enable the students to make the links between theory and practice.
Additional support will be provided through individual and group tutorial sessions.
Some student-led sessions are included.

The examination will consist of multiple choice, short answers and longer answers based on the module learning outcomes.
Exam format definitions
- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
