This module draws upon principles of practicum learning to support candidates’ development as clinical research practitioners. Candidates will gain experience of working as part of a clinical research team aligned, as far as possible, with individual candidates’ proposed research interests.
The aim of this module is:
- To facilitate candidates in the application of their learning in practice as a fully integrated member of the research team, making a meaningful contribution in one or more of the following activities under supervision: grant application writing; proposal planning and development; participant recruitment and sampling; gaining informed consent, data collection; data input/transcription/storage; data analysis; data presentation; report-writing; writing for peer-reviewed publication; dissemination through conference/seminar/workshop.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Contribute to research practices as a member of a research team.
- Efficiently contribute to project management.
- Critically reflect upon personal learning and professional contribution to a research team.
- Construct scholarly and practical research outputs that contribute to a specified clinical need.
The syllabus will be dependent upon the needs of the individual candidate and, as far as possible, they will be placed within a team that corresponds to their professional and research priorities and interests. The focus of the syllabus is on practical skills development in one or more of the following research sub-processes:
- grant application writing;
- proposal planning and development;
- participant recruitment and sampling;
- gaining informed consent,
- data collection;
- data input/transcription/storage;
- data analysis;
- data presentation;
- report-writing;
- writing for peer-reviewed publication;
- dissemination through conference/seminar/workshop.
This module will be delivered via:
- Practice-based learning within research teams focusing on one or more of the processes above.
- Three group tutorials with module lead or personal tutor to ensure clarity of purpose of placements. One preparatory session, one mid-point session and one end point session.
