The module will support students throughout the duration of the second placement including: preparation for placement, development of knowledge and skills relevant to practice, support for reflection, professional and personal challenge and for evaluation of own practice.
The module aims to prepare students for employment as a Newly Qualified Social Worker by providing them with work based learning opportunities to reach the standards described in the PCF:
By the end of qualifying programmes newly qualified social workers will have demonstrated capabilities in applying social work approaches with a range of service user groups, the ability to undertake a range of tasks and social work interventions at a foundation level and evidenced the capacity to work effectively with more complex situations. They may have deepened specific skills in one or more social work field. They should be able to work with appropriate autonomy, whilst recognising that final decisions will often rest with their supervisor or other senior authority. They will seek appropriate support, supervision and be ready to pursue continuing professional development. These capabilities will have been demonstrated through the last (or latter parts of their) placement together with the final assessment of other work in the qualifying programme (BASW PCF – End of firsts placement).
On successful completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
1. Plan and undertake observations, assessment and review of interventions in case work with service users.
2. Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and establish appropriate and positive relationships with service users, peers and colleagues.
3. Reflect on own practice in order to critically evaluate its effectiveness.
4. Manage the physical and emotional impact of professional practice on own wellbeing and develop strategies for building resilience.
5. Critically evaluate a range of interventions used in a variety of practice contexts.
Students have to complete a 100 day placement. The placements are within the statutory sector in either an adult or children and families service.
As noted above it is expected that lectures will be incorporated within the scheduled days of teaching and learning activity as outlined in the attached timetable.
The taught sessions will be followed by a period of observed practice as students prepare for and complete the assessment requirements for this module.

Students will be allocated a University Tutor for the duration of the placement.
Students will be expected to meet with their University Tutor basis throughout the course. Arrangements for tutorials will be the responsibility of the student. Any student may elect to change his/her University Tutor following discussion with the module or programme Leader or the Director of Education.
Students are expected to maintain contact with their University Tutors throughout the module. Tutorial sessions will be negotiated between student and University Tutor. It expected that tutorial support and supervision will total no more than 2 full days over the period of the module.
As part of their independent learning the student will be expected to engage in a range of research related activities to inform the Practice Placement learning and development: searching the literature, visiting the library, attending seminars and participating in conferences (where appropriate).

- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
