Students should be able to pursue an area of interest, to identify practice issues and to formulate a research project focusing on the respective profession and potential clinical application.

Module aims

  • To enable students to complete a defined and relevant piece of work in an autonomous and self-directed fashion;

  • To further advance student’s critical appraisal, research and problem-solving skills;

  • To enable students to critically evaluate and synthesise the research of others to inform their practice; and

  • To provide students with the necessary research skills and enable them to engage in evidence-based practice

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify, evaluate and select methodologies, which create and interpret knowledge/ outcomes

  2. Inspect and critically evaluate a specific area of practice

  3. Evaluate peer-reviewed journal articles and grey literature using critical reasoning skills

  4. Distinguish the processes related to research

  5. Formulate research question(s) based on the literature review

  6. Devise a detailed research activity plan, protocol or proposal suitable for the relevant assessment choice initiated in Research 1 (i.e. primary data research proposal, scoping review protocol, case study proposal or proposal following literature review) or for a new area of research interest.

  7. Plan and design the research project in a well-structure and coherent piece of work, including providing an extensive detail of the methodology

Module information

Overview:
