Module description

This module provides the culmination of your practice-based learning that will enable you to further develop your readiness for becoming an SLT in the multi-professional workplace, transferring theory to practice, and preparing for work as a newly qualified practitioner.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:

  • To develop professional identity and skills essential to becoming an SLT.

  • To provide opportunity to integrate academic learning from across the programme.

  • To help you to prepare for being an autonomous practitioner.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Evaluate, plan, and implement strategies for the identification, augmentation and management of speech, language and literacy needs and/or eating, drinking and swallowing needs with supervision and support.

  2. Identify ability and difficulty in the context of communication and/or eating, drinking and swallowing.

  3. Demonstrate flexible communication, negotiation, and therapeutic skills in interactions with service users, carers and other professionals.

  4. Formulate intervention plans integrating theory with practice through appraisal and application of the evidence base to support clinical decision-making.

  5. Articulate clinical reasoning and demonstrate the ability to plan, negotiate, implement and evaluate intervention in response to differing needs and circumstances of clients.

  6. Articulate and exhibit responsibility, initiative, and autonomy in carrying out the professional roles, responsibilities and behaviours of a Speech and Language Therapist in order to ensure safe evidence- based practice towards clients and themselves.

  7. Identify and prioritise their own personal and professional learning needs and experiences through critical reflection, supervision, and use of CPD activities and tools, recognising and reflecting on factors which affect the transition from pre-registration SLT to qualified professional.
