Module description

This module provides students with the opportunity to gain experience in the research process by either planning a short project to formulate a research proposal or conducting an in depth literature review in a nursing-practice related topic.

Module aims

• To advance students’ research and problem-solving skills
• To provide students with the opportunity to design a small-scale research project/literature review under supervision
• Explore the evidence base on a chosen nursing research topic and demonstrate advanced critical appraisal skills
• To write up a report related to nursing practice

Module learning outcomes

1. Demonstrate ability to evaluate and implement key elements of research methods in a systematic way, with attention to ethical reasoning and clinical governance (Written assignment)

2. Through a review of literature, demonstrate a critical awareness of a specialised area of nursing practice (Written assignment)

3. Critically discuss the selection of research design, tools, and analytical processes (Written assignment)

4. Produce a coherent report on the research project which demonstrates ability to critically appraise the relevance of the study to nursing practice (Written assignment)

5. Synthesise ideas and information from a variety of sources in making recommendations for changes in nursing practice. (Written assignment)

Module information

Students are allocated a research supervisor at the beginning of the academic year and will work with this research supervisor over the course of the year.

The research supervisor will provide guidance and ensure students are "on track" with their research. They will direct students to relevant sources of information i.e.; module guide, Moodle resources, marking grid etc. as necessary.

Students direct the supervision and tutorial process; they contact their supervisor to book tutorials and prepare for these sessions. This adult based approach to nursing encourages students to take responsibility for their learning.

The module will provide an overview of the nature and level of evidence, and ways of scrutinising its credibility. Through the module the student will foster the habit of critical and selective reading and the assumptions and values underpinning research. Additional teaching will be based around understanding of the research process and issues relating to specific areas of health care practice and clinical governance and ethics of research.

Learning and teaching methods

The module is predominantly self-directed and fosters independent learning. Some optional and mandatory tutorials/workshops will be included to cover issues such as literature searching and conducting a literature review by the Module Lead. Students will be allocated individual supervisors and meetings are to be negotiated between student and academic supervisors during the course of Year 3. Students work independently supported by an allocated research supervisor Learning will be supported by on-line resources to which the student will have access on and off campus. * It is expected that students will meet with personal tutor/ supervisor at least twice during the term. * In addition, personal tutorials can be arranged with the module lead. * It is the student's responsibility to attend group tutorials and to arrange any personal tutorials with the module lead. The student will be expected to engage in a range of research related activities: searching the literature, visiting the library, meeting clinicians, attending seminars and participating in conferences. Students will develop a number of transferrable skills from searching the literature, reading research papers, and using critical appraisal frameworks to make informed decisions about practice.

Additional coursework information

This module offers students the opportunity to undertake a piece of work of their own choice related to an aspect of nursing practice. There are 2 assignment options: 1. The first option is the development of a research proposal to address a clinical issue and provides the opportunity to plan and apply the research methods that students have learned about during the course. 2. The second option is to complete a comprehensive literature review on a clinical or nursing topic.

  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.

There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
