This module develops the students' ability to understand the nurse's role in relation to caring for the patient with long term medical conditions and multiple pathologies.
There are a vast range of long term medical conditions that affects the population of the UK and service users who live with them can be found across a range of primary, secondary and tertiary health care settings. They require nurses to have a good understanding of pathophysiological changes, diagnostic processes, management interventions and prognosis relating to both individual and multiple pathologies. This module is designed to promote the concept of independent living and includes the study of aging and end of life care.

Students studying for the undergraduate and postgraduate pathways will study this module together.
* Catalyst lectures will be delivered on key themes for the module to a mixed group of students
* Academic level specific tutorial groups will explore teaching content
* Tutorial discussion will be followed by academic level differentiated on-line discussion groups. There will be asynchronous discussion between the level 4 student groups at Colchester and Southend campuses with a similar provision for the level 7 students
* Moodle – the VLE will contain entry level content which will direct students to either Level 4 or Level 7 directed reading and support activities. There will be open access so Level 7 students primary reading can access the level 4 sections of Moodle and vice versa.
* Module outcomes are academic level specific
* The assessment strategy involves the same tasks but the level of critical ability required for successful completion will vary dependent on academic level.
Will be undertaken by the module leads and other members of the academic team as well as a series of clinical experts drawn from practice
All skills training relevant to the module will be provided for and will include medications management, use of dopplar, chronic pain management, long term catheter care, PEG feeding, inhaler technique, peak flow monitoring and spirometry.
Some independent work will be expected as part of this module. Reading and preparation time is specifically allocated for student led sessions at relevant points throughout the module
Placement experience that will support the development of knowledge and skills associated with the module will be provided within year one. Placement experiences will be sourced from across a range of diverse primary and secondary care settings.
Some elements of e learning are included which will involve contributing to a discussion forum.
Learning will be supported by on-line resources via Moodle to which the student will have access on and off campus.
All students are expected to meet with their personal tutor throughout the module. Personal and group tutorials with the module lead can be arranged as required.
The development of skills alongside the acquisition of knowledge will occur within the workplace.
This module does not appear to have a published bibliography.
