This is an introductory module for the BSc Nursing pathways only. The module focuses on the development of personal organisation and management skills for both the academic and practice environments.
The module aims are as follows:
• Enable a successful transition into independent learning for Higher Education
• Introduce a range of effective academic and information literacy strategies (including reading, writing, digital, information and critical analysis skills)
• Introduce reflection and reflective practice as a way to evaluate strengths and limitations in knowledge, skills, competence and personal attributes
• Develop numeracy skills in the context of the nursing profession
• Develop self-awareness, boundary-setting, emotional intelligence and effective communication skills that enhance the therapeutic use of self
• Acquire strategies that improve problem-solving approaches to both the theoretical and the practical aspects of the nursing programme
• Develop strategies that enhance personal development and metacognitive learning
On successful completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
Make effective use of University and public resources to search for and retrieve appropriate information, including: textbooks, journal articles, websites, online bibliographic databases, health policies and procedures
Carry out basic medication dosage calculations relating to tablets and capsules, liquid medicines and injections, including unit, sub-unit and multiple-unit doses and SI unit conversions
Drawing on self-development processes and strategies, develop and enhance communication skills that contribute to therapeutic use of self
Demonstrate knowledge and application of reflective models, practice and writing
Demonstrate modification of prior self’s values, attitudes and perceived limitations which evidence that personal development has taken place
The module takes a broad approach to Personal Development in which commonalities of developmental processes are applied to a range of situations. These include educational, psychodynamic, social/situational and cognitive processes. In doing so, students will be exposed to how skills and knowledge can become transferable to a range of challenges and contexts which can then be applied to both personal and professional activities.
The module consists of taught sessions provided by the Module Leads and Module Tutors, and combines a range of teaching and learning approaches including participation in individual and group activities, computer- and library-based work, use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) (Moodle), self-directed learning, and formative feedback on a range of assessments. Time within lessons will be allocated for students to read key texts and to discuss findings. Time within lessons will also be allocated for students to complete essential practical paperwork and to evaluate their success.
Overview:
* Lectures will be delivered on key module themes
* Academic level specific tutorial groups will explore teaching content
* Tutorial discussion will be supported by participation in on-line discussion groups and forums.
* The Virtual Learning Environment (MOODLE) will contain supporting content, including online lessons, quizzes and reading material.
* Formative and summative assessment strategies will enable students to evaluate their progress and set goals for their continuing development.
Lectures:
A range of lectures varying in length and approach will be delivered. Alongside this ,a variety of group work and interactive learning methods are employed. All classroom information is supported on the VLE.
Skills/IT Laboratory:
Students will be introduced to a range of skills that pertain to personal development. These include Communication, Self-awareness, Reflection and Boundary setting.
Independent:
All independent learning is guided.
Placement:
The student will undertake various placements during the module.
Online:
Learning will be supported by on-line resources to which the student will have access to, on and off campus. Students will also be supported to develop their skills in using technology to enhance their face-to-face learning.
Tutorials:
Additional tutorial support is available via the Literacy, Language and Numeracy Tutor. Online learning resources are also available, as Moodle meta-courses in Literacy and Numeracy, to support developing academic skills.
Skills:
The development of skills alongside the acquisition of knowledge will occur within the workplace and in their own time.

- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
