MSC B62024 Speech and Language Therapy (Pre-Registration)
This module extends on practice-based learning by enabling students to continue developing their readiness for becoming an SLT in the multi professional workplace by engaging with their first clinical placement.
The aims of this module are:
- To develop professional identity and skills essential to becoming an SLT
- To provide opportunities to integrate academic learning from current Year 1 modules via application of theory to practice in clinical and clinically-related sessions.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Use and reflect on the range of communication, negotiation and therapeutic skills used in interactions with service users, carers and other professionals.
- Evaluate, plan, and implement strategies for the identification, augmentation and management of speech, language and literacy needs and/or eating, drinking and swallowing needs with supervision and support.
- Critically evaluate and incorporate the evidence base to support clinical decision making.
- Conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the professional roles, responsibilities and behaviours of a Speech and Language Therapist to ensure safe practice towards clients and themselves.
- Identify and prioritise their own personal and professional learning needs and experiences through reflection, supervision, and use of CPD activities and tools.
- Begin to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention and make adaptations as necessary
- Identify ability and difficulty in the context of communication and/or eating, drinking and swallowing.
Professional body requirements
- In order to meet accreditation requirements students will be required to complete placements in varied settings, across the lifespan with supporting university workshops to develop key skills.
Syllabus information
- Fitness to place, including mandatory training
- Mandatory placement preparation sessions covering key clinical and professional skills, e.g., introduction to professional reasoning, principles of assessment and intervention, SLT service provision

Exam format definitions
- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.

- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
