Module description

This module provides an introduction to practice-based learning that will enable you to begin developing your readiness for becoming an SLT in the multi professional workplace via pre-clinical placements.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:




  • To begin to develop professional identity and skills essential to becoming an SLT. It will provide opportunity to integrate academic learning from year one of your studies and begin to apply theory to practice in pre-clinical placement settings.



Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate understanding of the professional values expected of registrant Speech and Language Therapists.

  2. Begin to develop professional identity as SLTs working as part of multi professional teams.

  3. Demonstrate emergent professional skills in placement locations e.g. linking language and literacy skills across the lifespan adapting and modifying communication approaches, typical eating, drinking and swallowing.

  4. Begin planning for lifelong professional development.

Professional body requirements



  • In order to meet accreditation requirements students will be required to complete placements in varied settings, across the lifespan with supporting university workshops to develop key skills.

  • Fitness to place, including mandatory training.

  • Mandatory placement preparation sessions covering key clinical and professional skills e.g., reflective writing, professionalism.
