Module description

This module provides an introduction to practice-based learning that will enable you to begin developing your readiness for becoming an SLT in the multi professional workplace.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To develop professional identity and skills essential to becoming an SLT. It will provide opportunity to integrate academic learning from Year 1 and current Year 2 modules.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:


Demonstrate the ability to:



  1. Use and reflect on the range of communication, negotiation and therapeutic skills used in interactions with service users, carers and other professionals.

  2. Plan appropriate assessment and therapy activities according to the needs of the client with supervision and support.

  3. Review the evidence base which supports clinical decision making.

  4. Conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the professional roles, responsibilities and behaviours of a Speech and Language Therapist to ensure safe practice towards clients and themselves.

  5. Identify and prioritise their own personal and professional learning needs and experiences through reflection, supervision, and use of CPD activities and tools.

  6. Begin to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention and make adaptations as necessary.

Complimentary learning or prior knowledge



  • This module extends and complements your learning from Clinical and Professional Skills 1 and 2, as well as Practice Placements 1.

  • It will bring knowledge and skills learnt across the SLT programme, including clinical placement.


Professional body requirements



  • In order to meet accreditation requirements students will be required to complete placements in varied settings, across the lifespan with supporting university workshops to develop key skills.
