BSC B630OD Speech and Language Therapy
This module will introduce students to observation and assessment techniques alongside the professional reasoning skills required to make decisions regarding which techniques to use and how to interpret findings. The module will incorporate learning around service users who are likely to present with acquired difficulties of speech language and communication
The aim of this module is:
- To enable students to develop an understanding of observation, assessment and identification of acquired speech language and communication difficulties
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the wide range of acquired health difficulties which lead to speech-language literacy and communication difficulties
- Identify and evaluate abilities and difficulties with speech language and literacy structures and functions
- Demonstrate critical understanding of the observation and assessment techniques available to Speech and Language Therapists to identify acquired speech language literacy and communication difficulties
- Administer, score, interpret, and evaluate key assessments in a role-play environment
- Transcribe and analyse non-standard English and identify areas of ability and difficulty
- Discuss the professional reasoning employed in making decisions relating to assessment choice and identification of difficulty and ability
This module is delivered throughout the autumn, spring and summer terms. In addition to some traditional lectures where tutors will share information you will be expected to work in small groups and independently to truly understand the content at a deep level. This will help enable you to experience the professional reasoning required to identify acquired speech language and communication difficulties
Taking a developmental approach to the programme, this speech and language therapy module will build upon understanding of typical communication from year one of the programme and provide opportunities for interactive learning supported by key lectures. Case studies and small group work will form the basis of the exploratory learning nature of this module. The emphasis will be to develop understanding of the range of acquired speech language and communication difficulties which are experienced whilst also developing the skills and professional reasoning ability to identify individuals’ difficulties.
