Module description

This module equips students with the advanced knowledge and skills to lead, manage and coordinate care during practice-based learning experiences.  Students will develop independence in the range of enhanced adult nursing proficiencies and procedures.

Students will demonstrate critical, reflective and person-centred leadership when working with others, and demonstrate proficiency in leading and managing the complexities and ambiguities of challenging and conflicting episodes of physical health care.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:

  • To critically evaluate sources of knowledge and evidence./

  • To utilise a range of advanced skills in adult nursing.

  • To be accountable for leading and coordinating safe, effective, person-centred adult nursing care.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Effectively lead, coordinate and manage high quality person-centred care of a group of adult service users, including those who are emotionally or physically vulnerable, and prioritise, delegate and assign care responsibilities to others where appropriate.

  2. Demonstrate advanced knowledge and critical application of the principles of infection prevention and control when leading care, acting as a role model in communicable disease surveillance and antimicrobial stewardship and resistance in adult health care settings.

  3. Demonstrate enhanced critical application of advanced mental health nursing proficiencies.

  4. Competently manage the complexities and risks when providing mental, cognitive, behavioural and physical care in physical health services.

  5. Demonstrate sound decision-making, clinical judgement and problem-solving capability based on current evidence, across a range of professional contexts and adult healthcare delivery settings.

  6. Demonstrate sound knowledge, understanding and application to manage the administration and optimisation of all medications commonly used in adult nursing care, retaining the focus on the person-centeredness of care at all times.

Learning and teaching methods


Students will work under minimal, often indirect, supervision of a range of practice supervisors who have been prepared for this role and their learning will be overseen by Practice Learning Coordinators in placement setting.  Link lecturers and practice educators from the university will provide support to students and placement providers.


Tutorial-based methods will nurture students’ reflective and critical research capability.  Tutorials will also provide opportunities for clinical supervision where students can engage in detailed reflection on incidents and experiences they have encountered in their adult nursing practice.  Tutorials will be supported by nurse practitioners from clinical partners.  Tutorials will be delivered separately to level 6 and level 7 students (40hrs of differentiated learning in total). There will be front loading of Level 7 specific delivery to support students transitioning to Masters Level study.

Simulated practice

University-based learning will primarily take place through simulation to fully prepare students to participate in the procedures, proficiencies and practices of advanced adult nursing care, managing complex situations independently and in teams.  Students will be able to practise approaches to leadership in a safe space.  They will also have the opportunity to engage with people with lived experiences to gain insight into their experiences of organisational practices and the value of person-centred leadership.

Exam format definitions

  • Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam.
